Beginners Guide to Utensils

Utensils

To go along with your pots and pans you will need more tools.

Measuring:
1. Spoons, typically a set of 4 from a ¼ tablespoon (tsp, or t) to a Tablespoon (TBSP, tbsp.)
2. Cups, typically a set of 4 from ¼ cup to 1 cup.
3. Pitcher, marked with cups, ounces (oz.), and liters. I like the 4 cup model (4 cups = I quart).
4. Timer, pasta needs to be timed or it turns into mush.
5. Meat thermometer, this will help you cook your meat to the perfection. From rare to well done it sure helps. Who really want rare chicken?
Processing:
1. Vegetable peeler
2. Micro plan, although it took me a few months before I decided I needed it.
3. Garlic press
4. Ice cream scoop, you can use this to make bigger meatballs as well as ice cream
5. Wisk, you can use a fork, but this works better
6. Scissors, dedicated kitchen scissors help when processing both meat and vegetables.
Cooking Tools:
1. Turner Spatula’s, you will need two. Stainless steel and a synthetic model. You should not use a steel spatula on nonstick surfaces, it will damage them.
2. Spatula, buy one that does not stain.
3. Melamine Tool Set, generally 4 pieces (less than $6)
4. Tongs, I have several. I use them often for cooking (flipping meat), to get toast out of the toaster and to get pickles. They are great for taking the frustration out of minor tasks.
